The home is a refuge where people are free to create their own unique space. As compared to the outside world, where they are subject to a myriad of external forces, the home is a place where people establish order and meaning, shaping their surroundings to reflect their values. Furniture is a key feature within the landscape of the home, and is integral to this process of self-expression.
A new approach to designing and constructing furniture would generate greater engagement through customization, while introducing concepts of craft and quality. By including consumers in the process of design and assembly, this thesis seeks to create value through experiences that are both fun and rewarding
Edward Hale was born and raised in New York City. He received a B.A. from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2005, with a concentration in Medieval Studies. He spent the next four years working as a cabinetmaker for a custom woodworking company in New York, before returning to school to pursue his Masters in Industrial Design. Building off of his professional experience, Edward seeks to create designs that are meaningful and engaging, bringing people closer to the objects in their lives.
